About this project

Tuning Synth is a web synth and education tool for people learning about music tuning systems and microtonal music. It allows you to see as well as hear the differences between the same interval in multiple tuning systems. Importantly, you can compare how different sytems handle the syntonic comma produced by True (untempered) Pythagorean tuning and standard equal temperament (12TET).

Instructions

There are 25 notes available, comprising of a lower and upper octave. The centre note is set to 440Hz (commonly 'A' in western music) by default, but can be changed via the Root Note input.

There are two input methods for playing these notes: The on-screen keyboard and your QWERTY keyboard should you have one. When using a QWERTY keyboard, the notes are assigned to the letter range between Q and N.

There are two play modes: One-shot and Sustain. When playing a note in sustain mode, you can stop it by tapping the visualiser or pressing the Escape key on your QWERTY keyboard.

As different tuning systems contain different numbers of intervals per octave, octaves are highlighted in the on-screen keyboard.
